Harry Potter is a child who seems ordinary, lives with a blood-related family with him, the Dursleys in Surrey. On his eleventh birthday, Harry learns of a mysterious stranger, Rubeus Hagrid, that he is actually a magician, famous in the world of magic because he can withstand Lord Voldemort's evil attack when Harry is a baby. Voldemort killed Harry's parents, but the attack on Harry failed, which left a lightning scar on Harry's forehead and killed Voldemort. Hagrid revealed to Harry that he had been invited to attend Hogwarts, a School of Magic. After buying his school equipment in Diagon Alley, Harry departed by train to Hogwarts via Platform 9 "which is hidden in King's Cross Station.

On the train, Harry meets Ronald Weasley, the son of a family of pure-blooded witches, and Hermione Granger, a magician born to Muggle parents (not wizards). Once they arrived at school, Harry and all the other first year students were divided into four different boarding groups: Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, and Slytherin. Slytherin was famous for being a group of black magic and evil wizards, Harry managed to convince the magical Sorting Hat not to place him in Slytherin. He was placed in Gryffindor, along with Ron and Hermione.

One night, Harry, Ron, and Hermione find a giant three-headed dog in the Forbidden Corridor on the third floor of the school. They managed to escape from the giant Trolls and after Harry was nearly thrown from his broom because of strong magic from someone in one of the Quidditch matches, they assumed that someone was trying to pass the dog. Harry finds the Mirror of Tarsah which can show the desires of a person's heart. Principal Albus Dumbledore moved the mirror and advised Harry not to look for it again. Using information from Hagrid who said it accidentally, Hermione discovered that the dog was guarding the Philosopher's Stone, a stone that could be used to provide its owner with everlasting life. Harry concluded that his concoction teacher, Severus Snape, was trying to get the stone. Harry was caught when he got out of the dorm at night and he was arrested. When helping Hagrid in the dark forest, he saw a hooded figure drink unicorn blood for healing. Harry concludes that the hooded figure is Voldemort and he also concludes that Snape is trying to get the lucky stone to restore Voldemort in full force.
